How we designed an award-winning customer experience for sustainable mortgages for a leading financial institution

Bank of Ireland introduced the EcoSaver Mortgage to promote energy-efficient homes and provide financial benefits to new homeowners using green mortgage products.  As its strategic digital partner, All human collaborated with the Bank of Ireland to research, design and develop a new customer journey that took something complex and made it accessible.

The EcoSaver Mortgage product offers customers discounts based on their Building Energy Rating (BER) and promotes energy efficiency.  Our strategy prioritised educating customers, incentivising energy upgrades, ensuring transparency, and integrating seamless user experiences throughout the application.

We focused on the following objectives:

  • Education: We implemented a comprehensive step-by-step guide to demystify and inform customers of the connection between Building Energy Ratings (BER) and a home’s value and running costs. The guide clearly outlines what’s involved in obtaining an EcoSaver mortgage, educating customers on BER's fundamental role in accessing better interest rates and helping them understand the overall benefits of energy-efficient homes.
  • Incentivisation: While the environmental benefits of energy efficiency are important, the immediate and tangible advantages often drive customer behaviour. To effectively motivate potential buyers and existing homeowners, we emphasised the direct financial savings and the financial benefits (e.g., lower interest rates and reduced energy bills) associated with energy upgrades.
  • Transparency: We ensured that the new interest rate options and potential savings were easily visible and easily understood to help build customers’ confidence and encourage adoption.
  • Seamless integration: By directly connecting the home energy upgrade calculator with clearly presented financing options and outlining the next steps, we created a fluid and intuitive experience that enabled customers to effortlessly transition from understanding potential improvements to accessing the financial resources needed to implement them.
  • Driving Conversion: We encouraged customers to learn more and apply for the EcoSaver Mortgage through compelling language and strategically placed content.

The design won the Best Experience Category Digital Product Design at the Institute of Designers of Ireland Awards.
